Pale Saxon Green Cotton Sateen

Cotton sateen, such as this Pale Saxon Green Cotton Sateen is characterized by “an irregular twill weave in which the satin effect is produced by predominant weft threads” (Montgomery). Examples of cotton “sateen” or “drab de coton” appear in the 1786 Hilton manuscript, which says that “many are exported dyed.”

Saxon Green, created using indigo and fustic, created a bright and beautiful green, something like our modern aqua. Introduced in the mid-18th century, it opened up new possibilities for indigo dyeing and printing. This Saxon Green closely resembles extant examples of wool, dated 1771.
