Originally a textile of India, "romal" or "rumal" handkerchiefs were a popular accessory among all classes and even used in the slave trade. Our design is based on the weaving pattern of an all linen checked handkerchief previously reproduced by us from the collection of the DAR Museum. The coloring is based on a wool handkerchief in the collection of the MFA Boston along with a sample book of romals from slave trade by the West India Company, This checked handkerchief is woven specifically to size with a border.
