“Spotted” handkerchiefs appear frequently through out the 18th and on into the 19th c. In run-away ads, portraits, genre art, advertisements and thefts we find handkerchiefs worn by women and men for fashion and practicality. Handkerchiefs could be made using the tie and dye method as well as this style which is resist block printing. This spotted handkerchief is inspired by an India cotton handkerchief attributed to William Cowper one of England's most respected poets. He is known among other things for the Olney Hymns which he wrote in collaboration with John Newton of Amazing Grace fame.
- Measuring approximately 34 inches square, our handkerchiefs are made of hand loomed cotton mull, hand dyed and hand finished.
