Wool: Worsted "Stuffs"

Burgundy Medium Weight Striped Worsted Wool "Stuff" - $15.00 yd

Worsted "stuff" was a term that referred to a wide variety of worsted textiles produced originally in Norwich and later in York.  These lightweight goods were characterized by their tightly twisted yarn, fineness of weave and smooth finish. This made the wool well suited to men's and women's garments. The grades of stuff varied from coarse to fine and could be plain or twill woven.  Often these lighter wools were woven with a warp yarn of one color and a weft of another. We have looked at a variety of stuffs which employed this technique.  Our fabric is twill woven with a burgundy warp and dark indigo weft. This wool can be used on both sides, giving a burgundy cast on one side and a blue cast on the other

  • It is a medium weight with a sturdy but soft hand, making it suitable for women's heavier winter gowns, petticoats, jackets and bedgowns as well as men's coats, jackets, waistcoats and breeches. It is also well suited for children's garments and light interior use.
  • Can be used double sided due to the weave structure.
