Originating in India and the Middle East and introduced to Europe as early as the 17th century, muslin was described as "delicately woven cotton fabric" With the advent of the Spinning Jenny, it’s popularity soared during the last quarter of the 18th century and into the 19th century. It was considered highly desirable for its lightness, and ease of cleaning. It’s white color is highly desirable and was especially popular in the teens of the 19th century.
- This fabric is very lightweight and semi-sheer.
- The satin weave of the stripe is extremely delicate rendering this fabric extremely fine.
- It is well suited for last quarter 18th & 19th century summer gowns, over gowns and half gowns as well as accessories such as aprons, neckerchiefs, caps, tuckers and mantelets. It is also an excellent time traveling fabric for a variety of purposes including gowns and trims.
