Cotton sateen is characterized by “an irregular twill weave in which the satin effect is produced by predominant weft threads” (Montgomery). Examples of cotton “sateen” or “drab de coton” appear in the 1786 Hilton manuscript, which says that “many are exported dyed and a few printed.” The color name "sulphur yellow shows up as early as 1798 being described as a greenish yellow.
