Serge was a twilled cloth with a worsted warp and woolen weft. It was of lighter and of better quality then kersey. Many kinds and qualities were woven and used for a variety of end purposes. We have studied a number of serges from the 18th century including a coarse "sarge" in the Foundling collection used as a baby blanket as well as finer Norwich serges made for men's suiting. 

  • This is a light medium weight twill with a soft hand and drape.
  • This fabric is suitable for sturdy gowns, petticoats,jackets & bedgowns, Men's lightweight coats, waistcoats, jackets, lined breeches and trousers as well as women's riding habits, pelisses and children's clothing.
