Serge was a twilled cloth with a worsted warp and woolen weft. It was of lighter and of better quality then kersey. Many kinds and qualities were woven and used for a variety of end purposes. We have studied a number of serges from the 18th century including a coarse "sarge" in the Foundling collection used as a baby blanket as well as finer Norwich serges made for men's suiting.
