The term “checked” in the 18th century referred to any number of patterns woven or printed that intersected at right angles in order to create squares. Checked linens were used for a variety of purposes most often found in aprons, shirts, children’s clothing, trousers and linings as well as many household items such as toweling, bed hangings and chair coverings. This check is very similar to a check left as a token for a little boy who was left at the Foundling Hospital, London in September 1758. There was no designation as to what piece of clothing it was, however we have looked at hundreds of checks in our research and perhaps this was part of the mother’s clothing (an apron) or a part of the child’s clothing (a gown).
- The medium weight of this linen makes it suitable for men’s shirts, women's aprons, children’s clothing, linings and utilitarian needs.
- 100% Irish Linen 58 inches wide.
