Light Natural Linen "Diaper"
Linen cloth was woven of flax fiber in many grades and weaves. Used in every aspect of living from clothing, to household needs, to the shroud made for the corpse.
"Diaper", such as this Light Natural Linen "Diaper" is a kind of dimity, a harness loomed patterned fabric, woven with lines crossing to form squares or diamonds. It can sometimes be mixed with cotton. (Montgomery p. 218). We found examples of diaper being used as children's clothing in the Foundlings collection. Holker collected several examples he labeled for summer petticoats, waistcoats and bodices. Contemporary advertisements list diaper for clouting as well as diaper for table wear.
