Serge was a twilled cloth, with a worsted warp and woolen weft, that was lighter than kersey, and also higher quality. Many qualities were woven, and used for a variety of applications, ranging from outer garments, to household uses, such as bed hangings. One coarse "sarge" in the Foundling collection was used as a baby blanket, while finer Norwich serges were frequently made up into men's suits.
