Mixed Green & Brown Worsted Wool Stuff
Worsted “stuff”, such as this Mixed Green & Brown Worsted Wool Stuff, referred to a variety of worsted textiles, originally produced in Norwich, then later in York. These lightweight goods were characterized by their tightly twisted yarn, fineness of weave, and smooth finish. The grades of stuff varied from coarse to fine, and could be plain or twill woven. Plain-woven worsteds were known as camlet, callimancoe and camlettine. Twilled worsteds were known as shalloon, durant, and lasting.
In the 18th century, the term "Mixt", for wool or worsted cloth, suggested colors that were mixed together, such as one or more colored warp and another weft. In broadcloths, it could refer to the variations in the natural wool, yarns spun together, or literal floor sweepings that were recycled into yarn and woven. You find mixed color woolens in camlets, cantaloons, cassimeres, kerseys, and broadcloths.
