Bone Linen Drill

Linen cloth, such as this Bone Linen Drill, was woven of flax fiber in many grades and weaves. Used in every aspect of living, from clothing, to household needs, to furnishings, to the shroud made for the corpse, linen was so common that a tax was proposed as a source of easy revenue on the coarser sorts being imported into the US towards the end of the 18th century.

Drill referred to the twill-weave of a heavy utilitarian fabric. Russia was a major manufacturer and exporter of linens and hemp, including linen drill, manufacturing many of the coarser utilitarian fabrics. The term "Russia Drill" became synonymous with any heavy twill-woven linen or hempen fabric. Russia drill seems to most often come up in relationship to bagging, trousers, breeches and sometimes Men's jackets. It periodically appears in military orders for trousers or overalls.
