An In-Person Workshop Experience
with Angela Burnley

Sunday, November 6th, 2022, 10 am - 3pm

Approaching historical fabrics can be confusing. There are many names for many different fabrics and it can be difficult to figure out what is what (and what are you even supposed to use that for?!) The 18th century consumer had an implicit understanding of what they were looking for when they eagerly searched the newspapers for ads offering the latest in fashionable or utilitarian textiles, just like you do when you read a fashion magazine or sales advertisement today. But how do we as modern people make sense of these historical sources to gain the same understanding as those 18th century consumers?

Join Angela Burnley and delve into the world of mid to late 18th century textiles with a focus on goods being imported into the American Colonies. Through a series of mini lectures with hands-on components Angela will introduce you to the common textiles being used by the 18th century consumer, discuss terms to understand these textiles, and give you a chance to handle modern samples to better learn how modern textiles compare to their historical counterparts.

Participants will:

  • Learn about fiber content, weave structure, contemporary name, and end use.
  • Engage in discussions focusing on the textiles available when considering variables such as geography, preference for certain characteristics, cost, and social or religious status.
  • Apply this knowledge with guidance to textiles available today to create guidelines for informed fabric choices in their historical recreations.

This course is a Beginner Level 1 and is perfect for anyone with an interest in 18th century fabrics and their application to clothing in the 18th century.

Cost of this 5 hour workshop is $95.*

Class size is  limited to 12 Participants
