In the 18th century, stays were the basic foundation garment upon which all outer garments were built.  They created the fashionable silhouette of the period much like our undergarments do today.  Strapless stays survive in countless collections and appear to be the more common stay for everyday wear.  Without a shoulder strap and narrow back, they allow more freedom of movement and can be worn easily even while performing heavy manual tasks.  This stay pattern incorporates features from extant 18th century stays in the collections of The National Museum of American History, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art and a private collection..
