Printed textiles were common in all social levels in the 18th century. England was a major manufacturer and printer throughout the 18th century, as was India, where they derived many of their print patterns. In the colonies, India cotton and English goods of linen and cotton were both worn.
The 1820’s were a transitional period in fashion moving from the Regency era towards the fuller skirts, lower more defined waistline of the coming Romantic era. This late 1820’s printed cotton is inspired by the first piece, a child’s fashionable dress with matching pantaloons collected by Susan Greene, collector and author of “Wearable Prints, 1760 – 1860”. Susan’s collection now resides at Genesee Country Village & Museum. The print of this fabric was originally printed using two engraved cylinders on a fine cotton fabric. It uses new techniques just coming into use adding to the expense. You can read an in-depth analysis of the original fabric on page 519 of Susan’s book.
