Fig Leaf Patterns Batiste Dress c. 1825

Only the bodice, which is fitted with two darts, is lined with cotton; the rest of the dress is sheer. The dress fastens at the center back: first the lining is pinned into place, and then narrow drawstrings at the waistband and neckline adjust the outer layer to fit.
The inset band on the skirt, known as Swiss Lace, was common at this time period and did not fall out of favor until the 1860s. However, by the Civil War years, the quality of such work had declined considerably. The construction method is time-consuming, but not particularly complicated.
FIT:
This dress was worn over a shift, stays, and with at least one petticoat and an under dress (bodiced petticoat). Its front is fitted to the body and the back is gathered, allowing for adjustment for comfort.

FABRIC:
The original exterior fabric is sheer cotton bateste, and the bodice lining is cotton. Solids or prints in silk, linen, cotton are found in various collections. Inset is made from net and embroidered design known as Swiss Lace.

CHOOSING SIZE:
When deciding which size is correct for you to use, measure your rib cage under your bust, preferably with your stays and underpinnings on.
