The Basics Of Hand-Sewing

Have you ever wanted to learn to sew by hand? Want to improve your hand-sewing technique?  Familiarity and proficiency with needle and thread can be both a practical skill for mending and constructing your own historical or modern clothes. It is also a wonderful way to slow down, relax, and focus your attention. Hand-sewing stitches can begin as simple as running stitches for basting that with a few adjustments turn into fine hems, strong seams, and beautiful gathers. 

This  1 day  workshop, led by Brooke Welborn, will include demonstration and instruction in:

  • Selecting needles and threads.

  • Preparing your thread and using a thimble

  • Various hemming, seaming, and gathering stitches.

  • More complex stitches such as herringbone, blanket, buttonhole and eyelets. 

  • Techniques for more efficient stitching and less strain on hands.

While no complete garment will be created in this workshop, participants will create a stitch sampler folder that will be an invaluable reference for future projects.  A full supplies list will be sent after registration.

This workshop is an BEGINNER LEVEL 1. Participants should have some knowledge of basic hand sewing and have attempted some of our Quick Stitch Tutorials on YouTube or similar. Please read more about our current Workshop Levels here. Appropriate for those 15 and older.

*CANCELLATION POLICY

Because of the nature and enrollment limitation of our workshops, we regret that we are unable to give a full refund for a cancellation.  If you cancel 30 or more days prior to the workshop, we will refund your fee less a $50 cancellation fee. If you cancel less than 30 days prior to the workshop, we will have to charge the full amount of the workshop unless we are able to fill your slot, in that event you will be charged only the $50 cancellation fee.  In the event of the workshop being cancelled we are not responsible for any costs by the attendee for cancelled reservations.
