Join Christina Johnson to explore the changing landscape of feminine support garments spanning the years 1795-1815. This course will explore the shifting shapes, terminology and language, patterning, and construction of foundation garments used to support the torso and breasts during this 20 year period based on extant garments, contemporary textual evidence, and images.

This 2 ½ day workshop will include:

  • An examination of images of extant articles, textual references, and depictions of garments in prints/portraits through an instructor led discussion of current research on these articles.
  • Discussion and practical application of the square system depicted in J.S. Bernhardt’s 1810 publication in conjunction with the Arc method to make modifications as necessary for some bodies.
  • A mock up process to the test fit of the pattern.
  • Demonstration and instructions for construction after final pattern approval.

This workshop is an Advanced Plus Level 4. While the finished garment goes together very easily with fairly simple construction techniques, participants should be ready for a challenge as they engage with an early 19th century patterning system that differs from modern patterning approaches. Measurements will be taken over a shift/chemise.

Workshop cost of $295* includes: 2 1/2 day in-person workshop and muslin for fittings. Those wishing to bring a "model" to make this garment for will need to pay an additional $40 fee.

Class size will be limited to 12 Participants
