Dorset buttons originated in the county of Dorset, England, in the 17th century. Their popularity grew so much that by the early 18th century, over 700 individuals were involved in making these buttons. Beginning as a thin disk of horn covered with wool and embroidery, they evolved into a variety of patterns using needlelace techniques and thread over horn, wood and metal rings. Mechanized button manufacturing gradually replaced the Dorset button, so by the mid-19th century they were rarely used.
Our button is made on a metal ring and measures 1/2 inch. It is suitable for undergarments, shirts and accessories.
