Indigo & Tan Wool & Cotton "Virginia Cloth"

A good quantity of "Virginia Cloth" appears in runaway ads of Virginia throughout the 18th century. Although it may denote a country made cloth, certainly in Virginia it is being made as described by Reverend Burnaby in his travels in Virginia in 1759. The inhabitants "make a kind of cotton-cloth, with which they clothe themselves in common, and call it after the name of their country" (pp 12-13). Most certainly Virginia cloth contained cotton but often seems to have contained wool or flax as well. It was woven plain, twilled, piece dyed, woven of two or more colors to create a heathered, checked or striped appearance in all manner of qualities.
