Dark Olive Drab Worsted Wool Stuff - Seconds
Worsted “Stuff ”, such as this Dark Olive Drab Worsted Wool Stuff - Seconds, referred to a variety of worsted textiles, originally produced in Norwich, then later in York. These lightweight goods were characterized by their tightly twisted yarn, fineness of weave, and smooth finish. The grades of Stuff - Seconds varied from coarse to fine, and could be plain or twill woven. Plain woven worsteds were known by such names as camlet, callimancoe and camlettines. Twilled worsteds were known by such names as shalloon, durants, and lastings.
Drab is a dull light brown color. Colors that were drab typically had blue or black added to them to mute them. Originally it referred to undyed homespun wool. The French word "drap" referred to cloth, which was a general English term, referring to wool. Cloth-colored typically meant sheep-colored. Drab may be derived from this French word, and was first used in England in 1688.
