Dark Indigo & Natural Striped Linen Ticking
Linen cloth, such as this Dark Indigo & Natural Striped Linen Ticking, was woven of flax fiber in many grades and weaves. Used in every aspect of living, from clothing, to household needs, to furnishings, to the shroud made for the corpse, linen was so common that a tax was proposed as a source of easy revenue on the coarser sorts being imported into the US towards the end of the 18th century.
Tickings or "ticken" encompassed a group of twill woven linens, including this White Heavyweight Herringbone Linen. They could be woven as a plain twill or herringbone weave, and were manufactured for bed ticks; fine, ordinary, or coarse, as well as ticking for "flock" beds. They were used in tenting, and for utilitarian garments such as aprons and gaiters. Ticking was also woven for men's breeches and waistcoats, as well as linings for stays. Some tickings from Hambrough became preferred for ladies shoes, and were expressed as being of "great detriment to the consumption of leather and likewise...to the Lace Weaver's Trade".
