England spent most of the 18th century under sumptuary laws which banned the possession of Indian cottons, so the Greater Manchester area of England began producing linen/cotton blends to fill the gap in the market. In London, these Manchester textiles were printed alongside India cottons for export. By the end of the 18th century, new inventions and cheap imported cotton enabled Manchester to manufacture all-cotton goods.
In the 19th century, the invention of the cotton gin made cotton cheaper and more prevalent than linen. Cotton can be woven, printed, and finished in various ways, making it a versatile textile for clothing and everyday use. Cotton has retained its popularity throughout history due to its affordability, ease of cleaning, and bright color.
