Black Worsted Wool (Seconds)
Worsted “stuff”, such as this Black Worsted Wool, referred to a variety of worsted textiles, originally produced in Norwich, then later in York. These lightweight goods were characterized by their tightly twisted yarn, fineness of weave, and smooth finish. The grades of stuff varied from coarse to fine, and could be plain or twill woven. Plain woven worsteds were woven in various grades and known by such names as camlet, callimancoe and camlettines. Twilled worsteds were woven in various grades and known by such names as shalloon, durants, and lastings.
- This Black Worsted Wool is lightweight with a plain weave.
- This fabric is listed as seconds because it contains a single white thread 8" in from one selvedge. It is possible to remove the white thread, although this leaves a tiny gap in the weave (like pulling threads from linen).
- Suitable for women's gowns, jackets, petticoats, men’s waistcoats, lightweight coats and jackets, lightweight trousers, linings, aprons, mitts and accessories, as well as children’s gowns.
- 100% Worsted Wool, 63 inches wide, 55 inches "usable".
- 6.69 oz per sq yard, 226.68 grams per sq meter
