Aglets have a long history. Used on the ends of lacings of linen or silk, they provided a easy method of elaborate lacing used to put clothing together and hold it on the body. Especially common in the 16th and early 17th century they could be plain to fancy. Our aglet is very similar to ones on a doublet from 1580 held in the collection of the MET Museum.
