Wool "Derby Ribbed" Stockings

( / )

On March 25th, 1780 William Kellow a store owner in South Quay, Virginia advertised that he had stolen from him, a long list of goods including "18 pair of worsted ribbed stockings."

Wool stockings were a commonly worn by the working class & military .  They wore hard and maintained insulating properties even when wet.  Our stockings are based on many seen in collections and portraiture.  Ribbed stockings were a common pattern.  In 1759 Jebediah Strutt of Derby, England patented a machine which made the "perfect ribbed stocking".  Thus the term "Derby Rib" which can be found in contemporary writing.
