Red, Tan, Black, & Cream Checked Cotton & Silk Gauze
In the 18th and 19th centuries, sheer, crisp, woven silk known as "Gauze", such as this Red, Tan, Black, & Cream Checked Cotton & Silk Gauze, was popular, especially for Ladies' garments as trims, overlays, neckerchiefs, caps, aprons & mantelets. Originally woven with two warp yarns twisted over the weft yarn, the weave was stable and strong. It was sheer, light, & semi-crisp, sometimes woven with designs or flowers, and sometimes embroidered.
It's quite possible this could be classified as a charconnae. In "Textiles in America" a fabric called Charconnae, or cherconees, was described as a striped or checked cloth of mixed silk and cotton from India, and was referred to by Thomas Fitch in June 1724 in the Fitch Letter Book.
- Our Red, Tan, Black, & Cream Checked Cotton & Silk Gauze is sheer and softly crisp, and can be used for caps, a variety of trims, dress aprons, mantelets, overdresses, and any application where a sheer fabric is desired
