Black & Blue Wool "Gauze"
Gauze, by definition, covers any thin, transparent fabric. Used for a variety of purposes, it could be made of silk, silk and wool, or all wool.
This Black & Blue Wool "Gauze" has a blue yarn running through, giving it a blue cast depending on the light. It is woven with an interlocking weaving, helping it maintain its tiny checked effect, and its sheerness.
This likely has more application in the 19th century. Later terms such as "Balzarene", a dress material mixed with cotton and woven on Jacquard looms to combine figures with the gauze ground, & later "Barege" which was woven for dresses mixed with silk, and favored for shawls, were all terms used for sheer, gauze type fabrics.
