Maroon Mixed Worsted Wool Stuff

Worsted Wool Stuff, such as this Maroon Mixed Worsted Wool Stuff, referred to a variety of worsted textiles, originally produced in Norwich, then later in York. These lightweight goods were characterized by their tightly twisted yarn, fineness of weave, and smooth finish. The grades of stuff varied from coarse to fine, and could be plain or twill-woven. Plain woven worsteds were known by such names as camlet, callimancoe and camlettines. Twilled worsteds were known by such names as shalloon, durants, and lastings.

For wool or worsted cloth in the 18th century, the term "Mixt" suggested two or more colors that were mixed together, such as one colored warp and another weft. In broadcloths, it could range from the variations in the natural wool, to yarns spun together, to literal floor sweepings that were recycled into yarn and woven.  Mixed colors were found in worsteds, such as camlets and cantaloons, and in woolens in cassimeres, kerseys and broadcloths.
