Black Crossbarred Wool "Gauze"

Gauze, by definition, covers any thin, transparent fabric.  Used for a variety of purposes, it could be made of silk, silk and wool, or all wool.

Although this beautiful sheer Black Crossbarred Wool "Gauze" might be a little early for the 18th century, it certainly finds many applications in the 19th century. Balzarene was a dress material mixed with cotton and woven on Jacquard looms, to combine figures with the gauze ground. Later "Barege" was woven for dresses mixed with silk and favored for shawls.

*This gauze has white dirt spots near the selvedge (though some are further into the fabric). They brush off, and will likely come out if dabbed with water. the price has been reduced to reflect this defect*

  • Our Black Crossbarred Wool "Gauze" is a plain weave, with a crossbar check created by a thicker thread in the weave.
