Candia Plaid Handkerchief

This beautiful woven linen Candia Plaid Handkerchief is reproduced from the collection of Old Sturbridge Village.

Dating to 1780, the original is woven in a blue, madder brown and cream, similar to numerous examples held in the collection of OSV.  According to a note associated with this handkerchief, it was woven by Mary Patton in Candia, New Hampshire and bears the cross stitched initials "M.P." in one corner.

Woven linen handkerchiefs such as these can be found in numerous collections, and were a common accessory in the 18th and 19th centuries.
