JP Ryan Strapless Stays Pattern

In the 18th century, stays were the foundation garment upon which outer garments were built.  They created the fashionable silhouette of the period, as undergarments do today.  Strapless stays survive in countless collections, and appear to be common for everyday wear.  Without a shoulder strap, they allow more freedom of movement, and can be worn easily, even while performing manual tasks.

  • This JP Ryan Strapless Stays Pattern incorporates features from 18th century stays in the collections of The National Museum of American History, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art and a private collection.
