White "Linen" Voile

Why do we call our ramie voile, such as this White "Linen" Voile,  "linen," a term traditionally associated in the West with fabric woven from flax (or hemp) fiber?  From ancient times, ramie, a member of the nettle family, was grown in China and woven into cloth. It appeared in Europe as early as the 15th century. In the modern weaving industry, it's often referred to as linen, because of its linen-like qualities, which can be confusing if the content is not divulged.

Ramie produces a long staple fiber, which is white in appearance.  It produces a smooth, even yarn, unlike flax which tends to vary in thickness, creating a slubby effect.  Imagine a very fine cotton muslin, but with the body, sheen, and durability of flax linen.
