French Hoods of the 1520s-1540s: Period Construction for the Iconic Tudor Headdress

Saturday, June 13th, 9am - 5pm
Registration opens Wednesday, March 11th at 12:30 pm
The French hood is an iconic part of Tudor fashion, and has become synonymous with the most infamous of Henry VIII's wives, Anne Boleyn. A close examination of period images and written references reveals that French hoods are made up of multiple, interchangeable layers that lay closer and flatter to the head than is often seen in movies and TV shows. Using this visual and documentary information, Samantha Bullat developed a method for creating French hoods that better reflects what is actually seen in portraits and effigies of the early 16th century.
This 1 day workshop, led by Samantha Bullat, will include:
•An examination of images of French hoods to see how the style evolved over time, and explore how French hoods were made and worn
-
Construction methods for creating a French hood from either the 1520s-1530s or the 1540s
-
Samantha’s original pattern for 1520s-30s and 1540s French hoods
By the end of the workshop, participants will have their French hood well under construction, and will have the knowledge to complete it on their own.
Participants will need to purchase a materials kit for $50-$55 depending on style, that will include all fabrics, tape, & wire needed. Please see our linked Supplies List for a full list of supplies needed for this workshop.
This workshop is an Advanced Beginner Level 1. Participants are expected to have strong hand sewing skills and to have previously created an historical garment or accessory entirely with hand sewing techniques. Hatmaking experience using buckram and millinery wire is helpful but not required. Please read more about our current Workshop Levels here.
Workshop cost is $150 and includes patterns for both styles of hoods.
Class size will be limited to 12 Participants
Registration opens HERE Wednesday, March 11th at 12:30 pm.
