Light Indigo and Ivory Woven Stripe Cotton

Cotton was a primary export of North America, and was the foundation of America’s short lived textile industry. Innovations in processing and spinning, suitable climate and soil lead to large holdings of land given over to cotton production and were made possible by the labors of enslaved individuals.
Our Light Indigo and Ivory Woven Stripe Cotton is suitable for 19th century applications. It could be woven as a plain twill or herringbone weave. Tickings were manufactured for bed ticks, and for “flock” beds. They were used in tenting, for utilitarian garments such as aprons and gaiters, for men’s breeches and waistcoats, and linings for stays. Some tickings from Hamborough became preferred for ladies shoes and were expressed as being of “great detriment to the consumption of leather and likewise...to the Lace Weaver’s Trade." The striped pattern of this Light Indigo and Ivory Woven Stripe Cotton  is one that we have found in our research, from several sources including London Foundling tokens and salesmen's pattern books of Manchester.
