Pale Blue, Grey, & White Striped Cotton & Silk Sousae
Sousae, or "sussi/soosy" is a thin handloom fabric made of cotton, silk, or a blend of the two, with colored warp stripes, imported from India. Usually about a yard wide, it varied from 10 to 20 yards in length. Souseas, such as this Pale Blue, Grey, & White Striped Cotton & Silk Sousae, were very much in demand in England at the turn of the 18th century; typical orders included checks, small stripes, and "white and black stripes". We find stripes being solely requested in the 1720s.
Examples are found referenced in the Maurepas Papers or "Textiles et Documents Maurepas", as well as early documentation from "The Plain Dealing Linnen-Draper" (1696)
